Trauma rarely comes up in the first conversation. What comes up is the drinking, or the pills, and maybe a passing comment about not sleeping much. The trauma surfaces later, sometimes weeks into care. It’s also more common than most people realize. Among patients seeking treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs), somewhere between 20% and 50% have a lifetime diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder. Any serious approach to trauma and addiction treatment has to work on both problems at once.
